A software renderer ( ref_soft) and an OpenGL renderer ( ref_gl) are available in the workspace. This is the quake2 project in the workspace. This approach would have been valid for Quake 2 because the engine is not fundamentally different but it was easier to spot the improvements by dividing it by the three main project types: Project type When I read Quake 1 source code I divided it in three part: Network, Prediction and Rendition. Once built don't forget to place the libpng and zlib dlls in the same folder as quake2.exe. Make sure your select the Debug DLL configuration.
